Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) S.A. was set up in July 1998.
Nuclearelectrica's main mission is the production of electricity and thermal power using nuclear fission, as well as the manufacturing of nuclear fuel, ensuring high safety, efficiency and respect towards the environment and the population. The management of Nuclearelectrica has its headquarters located in Bucharest where it coordinates the activity of its two branches: 1) Cernavoda NPP is responsible for the operation of the Cernavoda NPP's Units 1 and 2. The CANDU type reactor (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) which uses heavy water of nuclear purity as moderator and natural uranium as fuel was chosen to equip Units 1 and 2 of the Cernavoda NPP due to its excellent economic and nuclear safety features. Unit 1 is the first nuclear reactor commissioned in Romania, which began its commercial operation on December 1996, followed by Unit 2 on October 2, 2007. At present, the two units ensure about 18% of Romania's total electricity demand. 2) The Nuclear Fuel Plant (FCN) in Pitesti is the qualified manufacturer of CANDU 6 type nuclear fuel bundles. Nuclearelectrica's Values Safety nuclear safety is the major priority Respect for the environment a clean environment for the future generations Efficiency remarkable results with minimum costs Trust nuclear power can ensure the present and future energy demands of mankind Transparency - achieving a permanent, transparent and open dialog with the population and local community support ![]() |
